Things worth remembering

  • A 70-year-old makes about four times less vitamin D from sun exposure than their former 20-year-old self.
  • Broccoli sprouts contain about 100 times more of the sulforaphane precursor glucoraphanin than mature broccoli.
  • Sulforaphane activates NRF2 phase-2 detox enzymes; people start excreting 60% more benzene within 24 hours of taking it.
  • People practicing intermittent fasting naturally eat about 200 fewer calories per day, which accounts for much of the weight loss.
  • During a prolonged fast you can lose up to 10 pounds of water weight and your organs actually shrink as damaged cells undergo cell death.
  • A Polish sauna study found protection only below 190 degrees F; saunas in the 190-200 degree F range were associated with increased risk.
  • A hot bath kept at 104 degrees F for about 20 minutes produces effects on blood pressure comparable to a sauna.
  • Sauna heat lowers sperm motility, but the changes reverse after about 6 weeks of abstaining (and it does not work as contraception).
  • University of Chicago research found African-Americans must stay in the sun 6-10 times as long as Caucasians to make the same amount of vitamin D3, because melanin acts as a natural sunscreen.
  • A recent Emory animal study found psilocybin increased life expectancy by almost 20% in mice.
